Partnered with the Library of Virginia, this past summer, Virginia Humanities Education co-hosted 4, two-day professional development workshops in Danville, South Boston/Halifax, Richmond, and Arlington (4 of the 8 superintendent regions in Virginia). Each focused on “hidden” local histories and teachers received food, lodging, certification points, and a small stipend for attending.
With smaller cohorts in each location, we were able to have amazing conversations with teachers and heard excellent feedback like, “Awesome experience to help redefine teaching.” Virginia Humanities Education & Encyclopedia Virginia presented on how to use all of the Virginia Humanities programs’ resources in the classroom and received glowing feedback on our local excursions, including a Civil Rights tour of Danville by Community Initiatives team member Karice Luck-Brimmer and a walking tour of Little Saigon (Northern Virginia) by past Virginia Humanities Fellow Kim O’Connell.
